Guilford letterboxes

From: (MomaB1@aol.com) | Date: 2001-05-07 21:20:31 UTC
Help! My sister and I were in Madison, CT this past weekend opening
up our cottage and decided we'd rather letterbox - her first
experience and my second! (Only 2 boxes in Ohio - I'll change that!)
Anyway, we have some questions (how frustrating it is to seek and not
find!)

1) Westwoods trail: can you expand upon the clue: 'curiously balanced
shard of rock'. Man, talk about bushwacking!!! Is the box still there?

Found the Monument bx - yahoo.

2) Dinosaurs before dark - is it still there? Directions were very
straightforward, yet we couldn't find it!

3) Thimble Island Box: again, couldn't find it, though the
description was great and we were sure we had the spot! It wasn't
located beyond those "No Trespassing - you'll be prosecuted' signs,
was it? We found a beautifully rounded outcropping, with a gorgeous
tree, wonderful root system - looked like the perfect spot, but no
box. Geezle!

Anyway, if anyone can help these novices... I"ll be up in July and
WILL find those boxes!

If you were looking for the Thimble Island View Letterbox (check
http://www.ksdmsystems.com/letterboxing/ where I list the letterboxes I have
found with a scan of the stamp). I visited it on 4/19/2001, it was there
and in good shape then.

If you find any of the letterboxes I have placed, please do not post
a scan of the stamp on the web.

Thx
Randy

I'm afraid that if you post images of some of our puzzle boxes (for example
Deepest NJ #1) it would give away the answer so please dont post any of our
stamp images. Not that they are fine examples of art anyways ; )

Thanks

Not to ruffle any feathers but...

I happen to agree with Randy. I feel a bit shakky about seeing stamp
images scanned onto finder's websites.

I don't mind if authors do it, I am sure they would love to show off
their handywork. But I think it will sometimes spoil the surprise of a
good stamp if I see it before I offically find it.

In fact there are a few stamps I have spent hours carving (especially the
?? ones) and I think it would be disappointing to see it displayed for the
world to see. I would like to keep them mysteries as they were intended.

I however like the idea of keeping an online log of where I have
been, and just simply listing a table of dates and letterboxes should be
adequate enough for my tastes.

I wouldn't want to speak for anyone else, but I think it generally
considered bad form to post images that are supposed to be seen only
by those who find a box. Please don't post mine.

Hi Keith
One of the things that is most fun about letterboxing to me is the discovery of the image on the stamp when I finally find the box. If the images are scanned and published, it takes away from the surprise. One might argue that the very purpose of the rubber stamp medium is to duplicate an image, just as it is the purpose of scanning technology. Of course, I've already seen the images of the boxes that I have placed, and I've seen images of the boxes that other hunters have found when they show me their log books, but having the image available to view any time reduces its uniqueness.

For those of you who missed my earlier note:

I have already removed the images.

I would not have posted the puzzle or mystery ones any way.

I apologize again if I ruffled any feathers.

Letterboxing is fun, let us enjoy it.

Please do not post the stamp images from boxes placed by Dan and Melissa.
We prefer to keep the stamps as a surprise to those who find them.

Thanks,
Melissa
